In freeNAS 0.7 there's also a way to do this without using CIFS masks (which just modify permissions in BSD anyways).
After setting permissions in SSH, creating users and adding them to groups, do the following:
1. Go to the CIFS/SMB service page.
2. Change Authentication to "Local User".
At this point masks are not needed, as Local User causes FreeNAS to request user authentication on all CIFS/SMB shares. Since you have set up your users and linked them to the groups, the folders are now locked down.
